While parked in the parking lot of the grocery store today (Damon had run in to grab something), Lucy and I witnessed something that left me in total shock. There was a minivan parked next to us with an elderly man sitting in the passenger seat. He appeared to be waiting like we were. A few minutes after I noticed him, an elderly woman walked up to the van and handed two ice cream sundaes in through the window to the man. She then unloaded a few bags of groceries into the back seat, returned her shopping cart, and got into the vehicle. The gentleman then handed her one of the sundaes. It was in a plastic cup with a snap on dome lid - you know the type. This is where my jaw dropped. She snapped the lid off and tossed it out the open window! She then opened her spoon (in a plastic wrapper) and tossed the wrapper out the window! As she was doing this, she noticed that I was watching her. She seemed a little startled, but I don't know if that was because I witnessed what she did or if she was just surprised that I was looking at her at all. I kind of gave her a questioning look. I REALLY wanted to roll down my window and ask her what made her think that was okay. Lucy then asked me why that old lady just "glittered" (littered). Then I REALLY REALLY wanted to roll down my window and ask her what kind of example she was trying to set for future generations. I was so proud of Lucy for noticing that it was wrong to throw garbage out your window. I should have let Lucy ask her what she thought she was doing! As soon as the woman's sundae was finished, she got out of her van to look for the garbage she had thrown out. Of course the wind had picked it all up immediately and it was long gone. I know if I hadn't seen her do it, she never would have thought twice about it. She never looked at me again, but I couldn't resist looking at her - I wanted to give her another questioning look. That was probably rude of me, but hey, I thought their generation was supposed to have more respect for things than ours. As they were pulling out of their parking spot, I noticed they were from Missouri. Just one more reason to be annoyed by "Snowbirds" (name for retired people that spend their Winters in Yuma, AZ). We affectionately call them "Snowturds". I'll save my other "snowturd" rants for another day!

Oh my gosh, I can't believe it! I haven't seen somebody "glitter" for a long time. At least little Lucy knew what the lady was doing was wrong. And I like that you call them snowterds!
Maybe because they consider themselves "temporary" they don't feel any loyalty to Yuma like they do for wherever they live in Missouri! That could explain a LOT about how inconsiderate and unkind the majority of them are in grocery stores and restaurants and movie theaters. I've seen their rudeness in all three of those business when I've visited! I'm actually supposed to be their age, but when I'm in Yuma I cannot relate to them! I'm embarrassed of them!
So I just found your blog! Yeah! I will have to invite you cause I'm private! YOUR KIDS are so much bigger! Crazy about littering! I'm obsessed about it as is my boyfriend. He'll pick up litter! YOu should read my rants on my blog about littering and what will happen to you in Washington State if you do! LItter and it will hurt, is their slogan!
